With the growing importance of multi-storey timber construction, cross-laminated timber (CLT) is increasingly establishing itself as a load-bearing construction material. The combination of high bending strength, biaxial mechanical performance (stiffness in two directions), and ecological sustainability makes CLT a viable alternative to conventional building materials such as reinforced concrete and steel. In order to effectively utilize these advantages in vertical load paths, high-performance connection systems are required such as the innovative solution, of Structus from Eurotec.
TOC: CLT as a building material in engineered timber construction | Structus connector for vertical load transfer | Technical features and advantages | Proven load-bearing capacity | Scope of application & building practices | Optional components & sound insulation | Complete package for the construction site | Conclusion
The Structus connector was specially developed for post-and-panel constructions in multi-storey mass-timber buildings. The product enables a force-fit connection of CLT panel supports and column splices across several storeys. There is no height restriction as long as the permissible load-bearing capacities of the load transfer are not exceeded.
The Structus presents a double tube connector: the load-bearing posts are connected by an internal steel core, which transfers high vertical forces. Furthermore, the steel core prevents buckling failure. Each connection point can absorb loads of around 200 tons, ensuring an exceptionalcompression capacity. In addition, the CLT floor rests on base plates made of S355 galvanized steel. Fully-threaded screws are driven into the plates at an angle through the 30° inclined holes, ensuring force transmission in all directions in the column component.
Designed to transfer extreme loads between timber columns, Structus ensures both structural integrity and design flexibility for both structurally and architecturally demanding projects. CLT floor panels reinforced with KonstruX fully threaded screws, the connector achieves resistances perpendicular to the grain of up to 386 kN (38.6 tons) in the central CLT zone, 193 kN (19.3 tons) at the edges, and 94 kN (9.4 tons) in corner applications. Without reinforcement, the connector still offers reliable load-bearing capacities of 339 kN (33.9 tons) (center), 144 kN (14.4 tons) (edge), and 58 kN (5.8 tons) (corner). With design load-bearing capacities of up to 1,385 kN (138.5 tonson the wood side with class GL28h and a tested steel performance of over 2,400 kN (240 tons). Structus offers excellent resistance to compression and provides reliable long-term performance for point-supported floors.
The European Technical Assessment (ETA) has already been initiated following the testing phase and is currently in the approval process.

The Structus load transfer system offers decisive advantages, particularly for modern mass-timber buildings with open-plan designs and long-span office buildings. It allows for quick and precise installation on the construction site, ensures efficient load transfer, and, thanks to its compact design, reduces the static and structural requirements of adjacent components.
The connector is designed for load transfer between timber columns in point-supported ceiling systems using CLT floor panels. Depending on the load demand, Structus allows standard support spacings of 4-5 m. Larger spacings are also possible, provided that the rolling shear capacity and vibration of the CLT panels are taken into consideration.
The Structus connector can be used in seismically active areas as column splices since timber buildings are generally equipped with additive seismic bracing systems and dissipators (damping elements). In case of fire, CLT floor panels cover components of Structus, and also column penetration seal the steel parts. This prevents flames from spreading in the event of a fire and ensures the required compartmentation between floors.
SonoTec sound insulation is an optional component between the supports. The use of SonoTec increases the sound insulation of the system, whereby its application in the area of wall and ceiling joints has a significantly greater effect on the transmission of airborne and impact sound. However, additional installations such as fillings, dry screed, and impact sound insulation boards are more decisive for reducing impact sound. The installation of SonoTec is particularly useful in residential buildings with high sound insulation requirements.
Each Structus is delivered in a set with all the necessary system components, so that immediate installation with the correct connectors is possible. The set includes the main component, KonstruX fully threaded screws in the appropriate dimensions, the pressure plate, the base plate, and the required hexagon screw, including washers and lock nuts.
With Structus, Eurotec offers an innovative solution for vertical load transmission in multi-storey mass-timber construction. The system combines maximum load-bearing capacity, easy installation, and tested safety in a compact component. This allows architects and engineers to fully exploit the advantages of mass-timber while planning economically and sustainably. Structus thus makes a incomparable contribution to the further development of modern timber construction in a sustainable and high-performance manner.
