Mounting systems for solar systems on pitched roofs – safe, flexible and practical

Solar systems on pitched roofs are now standard in residential and commercial construction and are increasingly being used to generate sustainable electricity. At the same time, pitched roofs pose special challenges for installation: the substructure must be securely integrated into the roof structure, remain permanently watertight and withstand high wind and snow loads at all times.

However, pitched roofs differ not only in their slope, but also in the type of roof covering. We distinguish between tiled roofs, plain tile roofs and slate roofs, each of which has different requirements for the fastening of the substructure. In order to accommodate these differences, mounting systems are required that are tailored to different roof types and can be flexibly adapted to the respective roofing material.

These requirements can be reliably met in the long term with well-designed mounting systems. At Eurotec, we offer a range of solutions for pitched roofs – from classic roof-mounted systems and insert systems to in-roof mounting systems. In this technical article, we would like to give you an overview of our systems for mounting on traditional tiled roofs and show you what is important when selecting and installing mounting systems.

What are the requirements for pitched roof installation?

In contrast to flat roofs, the installation of solar systems on pitched roofs is more challenging in terms of construction and requires correspondingly more planning work. Factors such as the following are crucial for the installation of solar systems on pitched roofs:

  • Safe load transfer in the roof structure

  • Permanent watertightness

  • Adaptability to different structural roof conditions

  • Efficient installation under different site conditions

For this reason, it is particularly important to choose a mounting system that is not only statically designed, but also flexible and practical.

FIX-FIT mounting system: Proven rooftop mounting for pitched roofs

For classic rooftop mounting on pitched roofs, we rely on the FIX-FIT mounting system. This forms the basis for a durable and easy-to-install solar system on sloped roofs.

Did you know?

With a solar system tilt angle of around 30°–35°, the highest annual yield can be achieved in Germany.

The system is based on roof hooks of various sizes, which are securely fastened to the load-bearing roof structure (counter battens in rafters). Mounting profiles are then inserted into these roof hooks and fastened with fixing screws, which then serve as supports for the individual solar modules. The modules themselves are finally fastened with the appropriate FASTFIX module clamps.

A key advantage of the FIX-FIT mounting system is its practical implementation. The height and position of the roof hooks can be individually adjusted thanks to their slotted holes, which allows for any unevenness in the roof to be compensated for. Different models of roof hooks are also available for different load requirements in order to be able to respond to the corresponding roof structures. The entire installation is carried out using the one-tool system, so that only one tool is required for the essential work steps, which significantly facilitates work processes on the roof and reduces potential errors.

LayTec insertion system: Simplified mounting system with attractive roof appearance

In addition to classic rooftop mounting, we offer LayTec, an insertion system for pitched roofs. This is primarily intended for projects where the visual appearance of the system plays a role in addition to its technical function.

In contrast to rooftop mounting, the solar modules in the LayTec insertion system are not clamped onto rails, but are inserted onto the profiles one after the other without any additional installation work. This creates a flush module surface that not only looks attractive, but is also stable in the long term. The modules create a smooth roof surface, as there are no visible module clamps.

In-roof system: Integration directly into the roof covering

Another option for integrating a solar system into pitched roofs is the in-roof system. With this method, the solar system replaces the traditional roof covering and is fully integrated into the roof surface.

In-roof systems are building-integrated solar systems that not only generate energy but also provide protection from the elements. This system is often used in new buildings or roof renovations, as it requires more planning. In-roof solutions combine technology and aesthetics, creating a seamless transition and a particularly attractive roof.

Conclusion: Selecting the right mounting system for photovoltaic systems

The mounting system solution that is suitable for a project depends on various factors. In addition to the structural requirements, visual requirements, the desired installation effort and economic aspects also play a role. While rooftop mounting with the FIX-FIT mounting system is a flexible and economical solution for many applications, the LayTec inlay system and the in-roof system offer alternatives for projects with special visual or structural requirements.

Mounting a PV system on a pitched roof requires coordinated solutions that combine safety, flexibility and ease of installation. With the mounting methods presented, Eurotec offers a range of solutions that can be used specifically according to project requirements.

Careful planning and the selection of the appropriate mounting system form the basis for a durable, safe and efficiently installed solar system.
